A worker died after being trampled and a woman miscarried when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island Wal-Mart Friday morning, witnesses said.

The unidentified worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

“He was bum-rushed by 200 people,” said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. “They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too…I literally had to fight people off my back.”

I’ve lived with ME since the summer of 2000, and in the acute phase of the illness, which lasted for four years of hell, I was unable to walk or stand long enough to cook a meal. I would often brush my teeth while lying on the bathroom floor. All my life I’d been an energetic high-achiever–I’d earned a doctorate by the age of 30– and here I was spending most of my days in bed or in a big recliner chair, watching the world go by. If I was able to get up long enough to have a shower, that was a successful day. I thought I was dying. The ME went into remission in the 8th month of my pregnancy with my daughter five years ago, and since then I’ve had periodic (mild) relapses. I’ve never disclosed this information on SU–I’m here to entertain and be entertained, not to whine about my problems–but when I saw this article, it prompted me to want to say that this illness, so often misunderstood or regarded as “psychosomatic”, is real. Many people in our SU community likely suffer from it, and I know that it’s a merciless monster. I hope this piece of news gives them some hope.
